What’s the first question you ask when you research a gym? Likely it is, “How much does it cost to join?” If so, you are like most other fitness seekers looking to join a gym. Most people who call a gym or fitness center don’t know how to evaluate a facility so they stick to the one question they are most comfortable with, “How much?”
Here we give you five must-haves when considering a gym.
1. Define Your Goal
What are your fitness goals? If you don’t know what your goals are, how will you achieve them? Define the results you want before researching and joining a gym.
2. Does The Facility Have The Tools To Meet Your Goal?
- When you call a gym, ask the membership representative what programs or services they offer that will help or support you in meeting your goals. The people working at the gym should possess the knowledge to help you get from point A, which is where you are now, to point B, which is where you want to be. Personal Trainers, Membership representatives, the Concierge, or class instructors can all provide helpful information. They will be able to tell you about the classes, services, online tools, and equipment on site that will help you meet your goals.
3. Look For Inspiration
- Anyone working in the fitness industry should have an undeniable passion to help people reach and/or make progress towards their fitness goals. Ask them why they personally have chosen to work in the fitness industry and what motivates them. As Simon Sinek, visionary thinker and author of “Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone To Take Action” says, “people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” Make sure that the people who will be surrounding you are sincere, knowledgeable, and motivated.
4. Break It Down
Are you spending more on coffee than you are on your personal fitness? Break down the cost of your monthly dues to get a better picture of how that aligns with your other spending. Fitness and wellness are integral to your life. Figure out where and how this should be prioritized in the scheme of your life.
5. What Will It Take To Keep You Committed To Your Goal?
Take the time to meet with the appropriate people working at the facility , establish a rapport and have them recommend ways they can hold you accountable to getting to your goals…or at least make progress towards them. They, like you, want you to succeed!
With these five considerations in mind, you will be much better prepared to hit the ground running and succeed in achieving your fitness goals.
